I think above all else, 2+Hue is unique. Though we are a true one-of-a-kind in Central Florida, there are several vintage wedding rental companies scattered about the country. That stated, we are – to the best of my knowledge – the only company that not only rents antique refinished furnishings for events and styled shoots, but also specializes in hand crafting all of the often overlooked smaller custom touches that transform a wedding from pretty to spectacular.
Where are you located and do you travel?
Though I schedule all of my initial consults at various Starbucks around the greater Orlando area, 2+Hue is based out of my home in Minneola. Yes, it’s really called Minneola. Really. We are in Lake County just north of Clermont. Though most of my weddings take place in Orlando, I am definitely willing to travel in the name of amazing style.
What gave you the idea to start a vintage rental / refinishing company?
Before I launched Weddings by 2+Hue, I sold my custom refinished home furnishings and interior details at an art and antique market just south of downtown Orlando. On an unassuming January morning, I received an email from Carrie, a wonderfully kind woman whose daughter was getting married in July. Carrie was familiar with my retail inventory and she asked if I would be willing to rent some of my pieces for her daughter’s wedding. I considered her inquiry and did some research. Almost immediately, I discovered that the Central Florida market was seriously lacking when it came to rustic and vintage wedding rental options for brides-to-be. I pitched the idea to my husband and he gave me the thumbs up. The next several weeks were filled with building an inventory, getting the appropriate licenses, permits, and insurance. I even traded in my beloved Honda Accord for a huge black Dodge Ram Crew Cab (which I named Pepper). Soon, I met Carrie and her daughter, Bri, at a Starbucks for our first ever consult and the rest, as they say, is history. On July 20, 2012, I was honored to style Bri, my “original Bride’s” Winter Park Farmers Market reception.
You are so stinkin creative, how do you dream up these magically creative ideas? Is there anything that inspires you to create a piece ?
First of all, I love that you used the word ‘stinkin’ in this interview. It happens to be a regular in my vocabulary! I wish that I had a direct answer to the question of how I imagine new ideas for rustic and vintage weddings. Honestly, they just come to me. My brain never shuts off and new concepts hit me anywhere, anytime. Sometimes while I am on the treadmill, sometimes while shopping, sometimes while driving. I can say that the vast majority of my inspiration comes from my background in both retail and home interiors. I think that my previous experience in staging and visual merchandising sets the tone for the weddings that I create. I want my couples as well as their guests to become completely immersed in the aesthetic experience of a 2+Hue wedding.
How would you describe your ideal bride?
My ideal bride has guts! She is not afraid to push the traditional envelope of what a wedding typically looks like. Despite the fact that my furnishings often take center stage, it makes my heart sing when I am given the creative freedom to design completely personalized features for a wedding. Currently, I am working on a huge installation piece inspired by a famous retail store display for one of my September brides. She dreamed of such an aesthetic but brushed it off as being too cumbersome to achieve. I saw absolutely no reason why she should not have exactly what she wanted; thus, I am thrilled to make that come to life for her! It is always a plus when I ask a bride where her favorite place to shop is and she answers decisively with, “Anthropoloige”! I know at that point that we are destined to work together.
So tell me about some services you offer besides vintage furniture rental.
As I mentioned previously, furniture rental – to me – is a small portion of what 2+Hue is really about. What seriously excites me is the wedding styling service that we offer. In its simplest form, styling is when I arrive at the venue at least two hours prior to a wedding/reception and transform it from a blank canvas to the exact manifestation of a particular bride’s dream wedding. The styling process begins months before a wedding with consultations, on-site venue meetings, and countless inspiration brainstorming emails and phone calls. I discover what my bride’s absolute dream visuals are for her wedding and I make sure that when she arrives to say “I do”, that everything she wished for is in place. From huge suspended pieces to tiny handmade linen monogrammed bunting, the personalized touches completely make a wedding. In the 5 months since 2+Hue’s inception, I have discovered that brides have somehow been convinced that their dream wedding exists only in the pages of a magazine or the posts of a blog. So not true! I can, and do, make their day every bit as amazing as they had hoped.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about my job is the elation that my brides experience when it hits them that they can really have the wedding of their dreams. I am blessed to be able to do what I absolutely love doing and make so many people happy in the process. My job is incredibly rewarding, intensely challenging, and hopefully inspiring. In my opinion, it’s so much better than swimming with that whale!…..
