When you were a little girl what did you want to be when you got older?
My mom was the founder of Disney’s Fairytale Weddings. I grew up in weddings, so I always, always knew I wanted to work in weddings. It was in my blood from day one.
How did you get started in the business of cakes and sweets?
I was working as a wedding catering manager and one day I was struck with a sweet obsession. I started baking every weekend, and then we found out the amazing news we were pregnant… hence the sweet obsession J When it was time to go back to work after my maternity leave, I decided I wanted to stay home with my little one and start a *small* cupcake business. I asked myself what I was passionate about, and “weddings” was always the answer. I told my husband “I want to make wedding cakes” (having made none before) and he sweetly suggested I make one before deciding to change the course of our future. I did, took 1000 photos…. And got my first order two weeks later. That turned into more business and from there the referrals poured in.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
I love my staff, they are a group of brilliant, talented, ambitious gals. They not only work hard and share my obsession with excellence, they are sweet to my 4 year old daughter (who comes to the bakery every day after school). I also really love that I get to be creative and produce something original….and pretty.
What is YOUR favorite desert?
Anything with caramel!
You make some of the most beautiful cakes and deserts, what influences your design?
The industry has so many talented fashion designers, photographers, event planners, florists, stationers, cake designers…. I get so much inspiration. Brides I think are the source of ALL our inspiration. We come up with ways to showcase her style or the atmosphere that she wants to create and the end result is excellent and inspired!
If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world where would you go?
My junior year of high school I was an exchange student in France. My host mother was a chef, and made the most amazing food. There is nowhere in the world I would rather be than back in her kitchen in rural France with my family. Close second, New York is my favorite city in the world. Third runner up: Hawaii (I just saw “The Descendants”)
